The main difference is:
For those born before 1996, there was no official birth certificate. People only had something like a "Certificate of Only Child" or a hospital certificate. In this case, you need to apply for a birth notarization.
For those born after 1996, an official birth certificate is typically available. You can take this birth certificate to your local notary office to apply for a birth certificate notarization.
Now, let’s address a common question: How many pages does the birth notarization have?
Normally, the birth notarization includes the following:
A cover page;
The second page certifies the fact of your birth (in Chinese);
The third page is an English translation of the second page;
The fourth page is a statement from the notary office confirming the consistency of the Chinese and English translations;
The last page reiterates that the notarized translations are consistent.
Only this format is considered a qualified document and is recognized by the USCIS or the US Embassy/Consulate.
