Being a Notary in New York — What’s the Experience Really Like

There’s also this little notebook, which is used to record when and for whom we provide notarization. For each notarization, we record it in this book. That’s how it works.

In New York State notarization, we’re not verifying whether the document itself is true or legally valid. We perform procedural notarization, meaning the person is signing themselves and is not under duress. If they present valid ID and sign in my presence without coercion, as long as the signature happens in front of me, I will notarize it.
